If you have a desktop virtual pet, then you know how cute the little animals can be as they play along your desktop computer.  If you don’t have one, then you can create your very own pet to play without having all the hassel of a “real” pet to clean after.  Imagine not having to really feed, clean up after, or walk your pet.  You can have all the convenience of having a pet without the responsibility.  Sure, you will have to do something to maintain your pet.  However, it is not done, then you will not risk the survival of a real living this.  This is why virtual pets work so well for those who are trying to practice the responsibility first of a pet before adopting a real pet.

With virtual pets, you can choose to adopt dogs, cats. fish, or whatever type of pet that you like. The world is your oyster here.  Some programs will even let you design the physical features and characteristics of your pet including fur color and eye color.  Once you have selected your pet, then you can play games and do all the fun things that you can expect to do with a pet.  You can pretend to feed them and care for them as you would do for a physical pet.  You can even take them to the veterinatian for checkups and immunization shots.

You can choose to create virtual pets that reside on your desktop or you can choose to create online pets where you go to certain websites and create a virtual world for your pet.  This allows you to see the world through the eyes of your pet.  There is more creativity with online virtual pets as programs are able to nice virtual worlds for the pet.  On some sites you can dress up the pets and design their own rooms.

My daughter is a great Webkinz fan and she is able to play games to earn points to dress her pets up and design its room.  Additionally, her pet got sick because she had not logged into the virtual world for a while.  As you can see, these different programs have everything that you would think that a pet would experience.  They try to create a real world experience with the virtual pet.

With desktop pets that are installed as applications on your computer you may not get the real virtual world as if you had created a pet with one of the online virtual worlds.  They both have their downsides and it all depends on what level of interaction that you are looking for.  You can’t go wrong either way. :)
